Name Change Voting Results

SFS members voted by a majority of 78 percent to change the society’s name to the Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) at their annual meeting held May 22–26, 2011 in Providence, RI. The new acronym is pronounced letter-by-letter as ‘S, F, S’. Eighty-one percent of members also voted to change the society’s journal title from the Journal of the North American Benthological Society to Freshwater Science. Implementation of the name change for both the society and the journal should be complete before the 2012 annual meeting in Louisville, KY.

NABS Presidential Election Results

We are pleased to announce that Dave Penrose has been elected by the S membership to serve as our next SFS President. Dave will step into the President-Elect position at the spring 2011 SFS annual meeting, and will serve as President of the Society during the 2012-2013 year. Special thanks to Stuart Bunn for his willingness to run as a presidential candidate, and serve the society in this important role. The election was very close, and both candidates were clearly excellent choices.

SFS 5-year Strategic Plan 2009

The SFS 5-year Strategic Plan was constructed by the 2008-2009 Long-Range Planning Committee (LRPC) of the North American Benthological Society. The SFS 5-year Strategic Plan presents 4 overarching goals. The Society should: 1) better position itself so as to be viewed as a key source for science-based management decisions and to influence public policy and perceptions, 2) better interact with educators to improve aquatic science education, 3) grow and diversify, and 4) increase the number of individuals with taxonomic certification. This plan will be considered a "living document" that will be revised to address new and changing conditions.

Revisiting NABS Name

Archived 6/15/2011

A re-evaluation process for the Society name and Journal title was initiated at the Annual Meeting in Santa Fe, June 2010. Members have been asked to rank key words and phrases describing our society mission and activities and now are ranking possible alternative society names and journal titles. At the Annual Business Meeting May 2011, members will be asked to select either the existing name and journal title or the top ranking alternate name and journal title identified during this year-long process.
