The Academy of Natural Sciences was founded in 1812 for "the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences". Since then, it has sponsored global expeditions, conducted pioneering environmental and systematics research, and amassed remarkable collections containing more than 18 million specimens from around the world and a peerless library and archive. Job Summary
The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University seeks a watershed scientist whose work focuses on watershed hydrology, water quality, emerging contaminants, or biogeochemistry.
We are seeking a person interested in developing and applying science to real-world environmental challenges. The position is part of the leadership of a multi-disciplinary team that maintains a portfolio of projects that include research, environmental planning and assessment, community engagement, and outreach.
Essential Functions
Scientific Expertise:
- Design and implementation of projects and studies
- Management of existing portfolio of projects
- Contribute to institutional scientific outputs
- Publishable research
Leadership:
- Membership on leadership team of Patrick Center
- Managing and supervising an existing biogeochemistry section
- Advancing strategic direction of the Patrick Center
Collaboration:
- Working with multiple partners and stakeholders
- Development of new collaborations
- Support funding relationships
- Effective in interdisciplinary settings
Creativity:
- Grant writing and project development
- Contribute to innovative approaches to scientific research and practice
Required Qualifications
- PhD or Doctorate in Environmental Science or related field
- At least three years' experience in scientific research and/or practice
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in cross-functional and/or multi-disciplinary teams
- Record of original, externally funded research
- Previous work in applied environmental science
- Knowledge of aquatic biogeochemical cycling and processes
- Expertise in stream chemistry (e.g., dissolved and suspended constituents, organic matter and dissolved nutrients, trace metals).
- Familiarity with water quality measurements and instrumentation
- Knowledge of fluvial geomorphology
- Good communications and interpersonal skills
- Leadership experience, especially in team settings.
