Pay Range: $10,030.00 - $12,469.00 per Month

The Central Valley Water Board has an opening for a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) in the Basin Planning Program supervising the Salinity and Basin Planning Unit. This position will oversee the Central Valley Water Board’s salinity control program. Elevated salinity in surface water and groundwater has resulted from increased agricultural, industrial, and municipal activities, coupled with population growth. The phased Salt Control Program is designed to address both legacy and ongoing salt accumulation issues by developing and implementing solutions for managing and controlling salt accumulation in the Central Valley Region.

The position is located at 11020 Sun Center Dr. Suite #200, Rancho Cordova, CA, 95670. The Central Valley Water Board is currently implementing a Hybrid Workplace, as such this position is a hybrid position involving some telework and some in-office presence based on operational needs.

Duties:

  • Supervise, organize, direct, and coordinate technical work for the Salinity and Basin Planning Unit and Central Valley Salinity Alternatives for Long-Term Sustainability (CV-SALTS) program.
  • Evaluate beneficial uses and protection for waterbodies within the Central Valley and develop basin plan amendments as appropriate.
  • Oversee Salinity and Basin Planning Unit staff work associated with data analysis, assessment of the sources, fate and transport of salt and other pollutants, review and approval of technical reports, evaluate control, mitigation, remediation, and restoration options
  • Serve as a communication link between other technical units at the Regional and State Water Boards and between staff and management.
  • Represent the Central Valley Regional Water Board at stakeholder meetings and other meetings with local, state and federal agencies, Tribes, and other community members.
  • Implement the Central Valley Water Board’s Racial Equity Resolution including programmatic goals for the Salinity Control Program aimed at advancing racial equity within the Central Valley Region.
  • Implement the Central Valley Water Board’s Strategic Plan that includes strategic objectives and strategies for enhanced engagement with underserved and underrepresented disadvantaged communities and Native American Tribes.
  • Prepare and present written and oral presentations at public hearings, scientific conferences, and other meetings of the Central Valley Water Board and other federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Coordinate with the State Water Board Freshwater and Estuarine Harmful Algal Bloom (FHAB) Program staff and oversee the Central Valley FHAB staff.
