The Utah Department of Environmental Quality is seeking a Water Quality Program Coordinator (Aquatic biologist). This position is located in the Standards and Technical Services Section of the Division of Water Quality. This person will work with biological related water quality information, including the monitoring, analysis, interpretation, and communication of these data from waters of Utah. This position enhances water quality programs that use biological indicators to protect aquatic life and human health. Principle Duties
As a Water Quality Program Coordinator (Aquatic biologist) you will typically:

  • Work independently as well as with a team.
  • Strengthen existing collaboration and seek new partnerships with local, state and federal agencies, and stakeholders for water quality programs using biological indicators.
  • Manage biological related water quality data, particularly related to: fishes, benthic macroinvertebrates, diatoms, zooplankton, phytoplankton (including cyanobacteria), and e.coli.
  • Communicate scientific concepts and analytical results to both technical and lay audiences.
  • Update and execute water quality program management plans.
  • Practice effective project management for projects conducted internally and those contracted to external entities.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal person for this position will possess:

  • The ability to maintain a thorough knowledge of U.S. and Utah code, rules, and guidance with regard to water quality.
  • Ability to use scientific instruments and equipment.
  • The skills to write, review, and edit Division documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Experience promoting environmental quality and work cooperatively with natural resource management agencies, stakeholders, and the public.
  • The ability to assist with the development of various water quality standards associated with biological indicators.
