The Aquatic Vegetation intern will assist staff biologists with field sampling of aquatic and floodplain forest plants on the Mississippi River in Minnesota from June through September 2021. Duties include being able to identify aquatic plants and terrestrial species, including trees; using and hauling a canoe; recording data on a field laptop; and organizing, maintaining, and repairing equipment. This will include trailering, launching, and operating motorboats, navigating with GPS, collecting, and identifying plant species and recording habitat data.
An assistantship is available for a masters student at Tennessee Tech University starting Fall 2021. This project aims to better understand harmful algal bloom development in flowing waters and reservoirs by linking water quality to cellular level biochemistry responses and toxin production of individual cells. The student will gain experience using infrared microspectroscopy, and conducting field or laboratory-based experiments in algal ecology. This teaching assistantship will include tuition and fees and a 12-month stipend, and require teaching an introductory biology laboratory.
The Department of Geography and Environmental Systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) seeks to hire a postdoctoral scholar in hydrography and geomorphology. The successful candidate will support implementation and refinement of automated stream mapping approaches in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and work with a team of collaborators to analyze existing validation data. Candidates will be encouraged to pursue new research questions with the resulting data products.
