DETAILED POSITION DESCRIPTION: One full-time position for a research assistant is available in the Aquatic Ecology Lab. The Research Assistant will count zooplankton samples for the Lake Erie Plankton Abundance Study (LEPAS), a collaboration between OSU and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. LEPAS has monitored zooplankton in western and central basin of Lake Erie since 1995. The Research Assistant will work closely with other LEPAS team members and assist with processing zooplankton samples, analyzing chlorophyll a samples, overseeing undergraduate volunteers/workers, and assisting with data entry. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- 75% Zooplankton enumeration: The primary task of the Research Assistant will be to enumerate zooplankton samples following the LEPAS protocol.
- 25% Miscellaneous tasks: The Research Assistant will help process chlorophyl a samples, collect samples from ODNR offices, and oversee undergraduate volunteers/workers who help with sample buffering, chlorophyl a samples, and Bythotrephes samples.
EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field (ecology, natural resources, fisheries). Further education and/or experience is preferred. Candidate must be self-motivated, willing to work both independently and in a team setting. The ideal candidate would have training and an interest in aquatic ecology as well as experience counting zooplankton samples.
OFFICIAL TITLE: Research Assistant I-B/H
SALARY: ~$15-17/hour, depending upon experience. This is a one-year position that may be extended depending upon performance and funding availability.
