Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) is looking for an Aquatic Field Research Technician to join our aquatic ecology research team and work in the Great Lakes. You will perform field sampling and work with instrumentation related to limnological research at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (NOAA GLERL). You will perform routine assignments, provide technical lab support, perform a variety of tests, troubleshoot problems and recommend solutions. Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in sampling cruises aboard research vessels to collect plankton, water, and sediments
  • Assist with calibration and maintenance of field instrumentation
  • Perform data processing and curation while following written operating procedures
  • Assist with water sample processing from cruises and perform laboratory analyses (e.g., filtration, preservation, materials preparation)

Required qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or a related field
  • Experience in a research laboratory setting related to limnology or oceanography
  • Experience working aboard vessels in large bodies of water under various weather conditions
  • Experience performing data handling and visualization in R or Python
  • Experience calibrating and using instruments for limnological or oceanographic research (e.g., CTD, sondes) preferred
  • Experience working with relational databases to organize data preferred
  • Experience contributing to peer-reviewed papers by helping to analyze data, writing, and preparing figures preferred
