Assistant or Associate Professor of Environmental Science

Franklin University Switzerland seeks applications for the position of Assistant / Associate Professor of Environmental Science, the first of two hires we plan to do in this area this year. The position is full-time, renewable, and with a clear promotion ladder. The position begins in January 2023. The successful candidate needs to have a Ph.D. in a relevant area at the time of hire. Priority will be given to scholars with expertise in one (or more) of the following areas: climate change, sustainability science, geographic information systems, plant ecology, hydrology, or limnology.

The new hire should be able to teach a variety of courses in the environmental sciences and biology at the undergraduate level and have teaching and research interests that will be able to contribute to a planned graduate program. They will be expected to teach and advise in the current undergraduate environmental program with majors in environmental studies and environmental science. A normal course load at Franklin is the equivalent of six (3 credit or 6 ECTS) courses per year, including one course with an Academic Travel component. They will also actively contribute to the development of and eventually teach and advise in the new graduate program, which will focus on water resources and climate change. They will also be expected to maintain an active research program.

Consistent with the mission of the University, applicants must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in both teaching and scholarship, an active research agenda, and the ability to contribute to the Academic Travel program (https://www.fus.edu/academics/academic-travel), a fundamental part of Franklin’s international, interdisciplinary, and intercultural curriculum. Ideally, candidates will have international experience and be conversant in one of the official languages of Switzerland. Experience with Swiss/EU funded projects is also a plus.

As Franklin is an Equal Opportunity Employer that values diversity, we welcome applications from qualified persons of all backgrounds who have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

To apply, please submit to APESsearch@fus.edu, a single PDF document with the following components:

  • a letter of application,
  • a CV with contact information for three references,
  • a writing sample,
  • a succinct statement of teaching philosophy, and

Review of applications will begin on 16 August 2022 and continue on a rolling basis. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed via videoconferencing. Finalists will be invited to campus for in-person interviews.
