WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Groundwater Scientist provides technical and scientific leadership to manage groundwater sustainably in California. Because many of California’s rivers, wetlands and springs depend upon sufficient groundwater levels, the Groundwater Scientist will have an important role demonstrating the importance of the interconnection of groundwater with surface water. They will help advance an understanding of how sustainable groundwater management can help meet environmental flow criteria and ecosystem needs in rivers. The Groundwater Scientist will be the lead groundwater expert, working with ecologists, conservation practitioners, policy experts and others on teams developing science to inform policies, regulations, and on-the-ground projects that integrate groundwater and surface water management to protect freshwater ecosystems. In addition, the Groundwater Scientist will provide thought-leadership and technical review of projects focused on groundwater recharge and developing or applying analytical models to evaluate relationships between groundwater pumping and streamflow depletion.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

If you’re looking for a career where you can find purpose, come join the California Water Team at The Nature Conservancy as a Groundwater Scientist. We’re looking for a passionate, dedicated person to help establish the Conservancy as a leading partner in sustainable water management. You will provide scientific expertise to multidisciplinary teams and partner initiatives developing and implementing strategies for achieving conservation outcomes via the integration of groundwater and surface water management in California. You will advance the science needed to improve groundwater management for riverine and groundwater dependent ecosystems, through independent and collaborative cutting-edge research. You will identify key groundwater management challenges and develop innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address those challenges. You will develop, lead, and leverage a network of internal and external partners – including federal and state agencies, academic institutions, water districts, and other scientists – to develop the science, research, and technology to advance the Conservancy’s groundwater conservation strategies and objectives. Strong communication skills, experience interpreting scientific information and an entrepreneurial spirit are key in this role. Come join TNC and apply today!
