J. Nicholene Bishop Professorship in Biology (Freshwater Biology)

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa invites outstanding individuals to apply for the J. Nicholene Bishop Professorship in Biology. This is a full-time (9-month) tenured position at the level of Associate/Full Professor. Candidates must have an established, extramurally funded and internationally recognized research program focused within the broad field of freshwater biology. The department’s faculty conducts cutting-edge research in the fields of global change biology, ecosystem ecology, and biodiversity science; we seek exceptional candidates who would complement these existing areas of strength. In addition to maintaining an international research presence, the successful applicant will be encouraged to leverage Alabama’s unique and diverse habitats and water resources to lead an innovative research program. Further, the successful candidate will have exceptional opportunities to forge collaborations with the NOAA National Water Center and the USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility, both located on the UA campus, and UA researchers with diverse interests in interdisciplinary water research at the Alabama Water Institute, the Center for Freshwater Studies, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, and established local field research sites (UA’s Tanglewood Biological Station, nearby NEON sites). 

Applicants must have a Ph.D., evidence of significant intellectual contributions to the field of freshwater biology, an excellent track record of federally funded collaborative research, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching in a biological sciences department at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate courses in general biology or ecology, as well as specialized undergraduate and graduate courses in the successful candidate’s area of expertise.Questions about the position should be addressed to the chair of the search committee, Dr. Jon Benstead (jbenstead@ua.edu).
