Overview: The Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL is seeking a technical professional to conduct laboratory work on ecotoxicology and bioaccumulation tasks. The technician will support ongoing projects in the Toxicology Lab and various mercury-related projects by helping maintain cultures, conducting toxicity tests, and aiding general lab maintenance. Previous lab experience is not required but is preferred. Candidates will be provided with on-the-job training.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Prepare and conduct toxicity tests using zooplankton and fish following EPA protocols on schedule
- Maintain and monitor laboratory cultures (phytoplankton, zooplankton, fish, bivalves).
- Acid wash glassware, prepare culture media, and other tasks related to general lab maintenance.
- Counting algae and zooplankton and taking general biometric measurements (length, weight, etc.)
- Data entry, QA, and analysis
- Maintain detailed lab notes
- Assist with report preparation to meet required deadlines
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
Required Qualifications:
- BA or BS in ecology, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, or a related field is desired; Associates Degree in related field with experience will also be considered
- Experience working in a laboratory.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and also collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
- Attention to detail
- Toxicity testing will occasionally require work on weekends.
- Flexibility to work on weekends is needed.
