Overview: The Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL is seeking a technical professional to conduct laboratory work on ecotoxicology and bioaccumulation tasks. The technician will support ongoing projects in the Toxicology Lab and various mercury-related projects by helping maintain cultures, conducting toxicity tests, and aiding general lab maintenance. Previous lab experience is not required but is preferred. Candidates will be provided with on-the-job training.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and conduct toxicity tests using zooplankton and fish following EPA protocols on schedule
  • Maintain and monitor laboratory cultures (phytoplankton, zooplankton, fish, bivalves).
  • Acid wash glassware, prepare culture media, and other tasks related to general lab maintenance.
  • Counting algae and zooplankton and taking general biometric measurements (length, weight, etc.)
  • Data entry, QA, and analysis
  • Maintain detailed lab notes
  • Assist with report preparation to meet required deadlines
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA or BS in ecology, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, or a related field is desired; Associates Degree in related field with experience will also be considered
  • Experience working in a laboratory.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and also collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Attention to detail
  • Toxicity testing will occasionally require work on weekends.
  • Flexibility to work on weekends is needed.
