Laboratory Manager, Graduate Student, and Postdoctoral Researcher Positions

The Allen Lab (www.allenlab.org) is recruiting a Laboratory Manager, a Graduate Student, and a Postdoctoral Researcher. Lab research projects center on understanding how natural and anthropogenic disturbances influence community structure and function in streams and rivers. Details for each position are below. Laboratory Manager: Two years of funds are available for a full-time laboratory manager. The responsibilities for this position will include, helping to test and develop DNA metabarcoding protocols, field sampling of streams for benthic macroinvertebrates and environmental DNA, and assisting with general lab maintenance and upkeep. This position will require a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in science. A degree in biology, ecology, microbiology, or environmental science; and experience with molecular lab techniques, is preferred. The Laboratory Manager would start in Spring 2022 (January preferred), expected salary range is $35k-50k/yr, depending on education and experience. Graduate Student: Funds are available for MS/PhD student to start in Fall 2022. The graduate student would work on the collaborative NSF-funded StreamCLIMES project, which seeks to understand how drying influences stream biodiversity, community structure and food web dynamics in different climates across the United States. The graduate student would be expected to develop a thesis/dissertation that complements the overall goals of the research project. The student would have the opportunity to conduct team science and develop an extensive research network working with collaborators at 8 different US institutions. A wide range of research foci are available for the graduate student to pursue. Applicants interested in field research, spatial or food web modeling, DNA metabarcoding, and/or stable isotope ecology are encouraged to apply. The graduate student could apply to the Penn State Intercollege Graduate Degree Program in Ecology or to the Wildlife and Fisheries Graduate Program in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management. Graduate stipends are expected to be $25k-$30k/yr, application deadlines are December 15, 2021.

Postdoctoral Researcher: Two years of funds are available for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the collaborative NSF-funded StreamCLIMES project, which seeks to understand how drying influences stream biodiversity, community structure and food web dynamics in different climates across the United States. Like the graduate student position above, the postdoc would be expected to develop research projects that complement the overall goals of the research project. The postdoc would have the opportunity to participate in team science and expand research network with collaborators at 8 different US institutions. A wide range of research foci are available for the postdoc to pursue. Applicants interested in field research, spatial or food web modeling, DNA metabarcoding, and/or stable isotope ecology are encouraged to apply. The postdoc would start in sometime during Spring 2022, expected salary is $48k-50k/yr. Application review will begin October 15 and continue until suitable candidate is found.
