Dr. Wayne Hung is seeking a motivated MS student to join his group at the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) Natural Sciences Department starting Fall 2024. The prospective candidate will be involved in developing monitoring plans that integrate air quality, metals, and microbiomes in the Klamath Basin. The project will involve formulating creative research inquiries, collecting and processing samples of air, dust, and soil, developing statistical models to direct monitoring and management efforts, and potentially collaborating with diverse local agencies, tribal communities, and stakeholders.

Candidates should possess the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, environmental engineering, environmental science, or a relevant field.
  • Experience in environmental research.
  • Proficiency in written, verbal, and quantitative skills.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate some of the following skills or be willing to learn them:

  • Field sampling techniques for water, air, and soil.
  • Knowledge of membrane filtration, DNA extraction methods, both culture-based (e.g., IDEXX or plate counts) and molecular-based approaches (qPCR, ddPCR) for microbial detection.
  • Familiarity with data analysis using R software, GIS, etc.
  • Strong scientific writing and communication abilities.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions: Must have a valid driver license.

OIT offers a competitive support package, which includes a monthly stipend and tuition waiver for MS students and access to student health services.
