Collins Lab at the University of Wyoming

An MS or PhD graduate research assistantship is available in the Collins Lab (collins-lab.org) in the Department of Zoology and Physiology and the Program in Ecology at the University of Wyoming. The student will work on a project funded by the Wyoming Water Research Program that focuses on harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) in Wyoming lakes and reservoirs. We are seeking an independent and motivated individual to design and conduct field and lab research related to HCBs with a specific focus on cyanotoxin production. The successful candidate will be supervised by Sarah Collins and will collaborate with other project PIs, including Drs. Willie Fetzer and Annika Walters (UW) and several agency partners from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality and US Forest Service. This project could be suitable for applicants seeking either MS or PhD degrees and the preferred start date is January 2024.

Additional Information: The University of Wyoming has a total enrollment of 12,000 full-time students with active ecological research across multiple departments, including Zoology and Physiology, Botany,
Ecosystem Science and Management, and the Program in Ecology. The university is located in Laramie, a small college town with a relatively low cost of living that is close to multiple mountain ranges, and

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in ecology, biology, chemistry or a related field with undergraduate GPA >3.00. Field and laboratory experience in freshwater ecosystems.

Preferred Qualifications: We are specifically seeking candidates with experience in the following areas, although we recognize that no candidate is likely to have all of these skills! Specific areas of expertise
that are preferred could include - writing (grants and/or peer-reviewed publications), analytical chemistry, quantitative, statistical or programming skills, outdoor experience in remote locations, or
experience working with state or federal agencies to understand water quality problems and management strategies.

Stipend: ~$2,200/mo. stipend plus tuition and health insurance
