PhD student opportunity in limnology

Posted:
03/22/2021
Expiration Date:
05/01/2021

I am seeking a PhD student broadly interested in limnology to join my lab. Research will be focused on aeration to oxygenate the hypolimnion of a small reservoir in northeastern Oregon to reduce severe internal loading of phosphorus that contributes to annual blooms of toxic cyanobacteria. Some modeling will be required, and opportunities exist to tie into and expand existing research on zooplankton ecology. This project is part of a long-term research program at the reservoir.

Candidates will have a strong background in limnology (chemical and biological), be familiar with standard limnological field techniques; have laboratory skills analyzing chemical constituents (e.g. spectroscopy P-analysis EPA method 365 etc.); experience operating outboard powered boats incl. launching, trailering and towing; a valid driver’s license to allow operation of a university vehicle; familiarity with common computer software; and ability to pass a criminal background check. Desired skills include familiarity with modeling, R, and ESRI GIS software; the ability to work independently and maintain good relations with agency personnel and stakeholders; and an abundance of enthusiasm for all things wet. Due to security restrictions related to the US Army Corps of Engineers site, the candidate must be a U.S. citizen. Ideally, candidates will have a MS in limnology or closely related field, or experiences allowing transition into a PhD. Start date is expected to be June 1, 2021, apply by May 01, 2021.

Those interested, please contact Frank. M. Wilhelm, Department of Fish and Wildlife Sciences, College of Natural Resources, University of Idaho, Moscow ID (fwilhelm@uidaho.edu) with letter of interest indicating how the above qualifications are met, an up-to-date CV, unofficial transcripts, an example of your writing, and names and contacts of three references, all in one PDF file.
