POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN ENVIRONMENTAL FLOWS WITH ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE CANADA, BASED AT THE CANADIAN RIVERS INSTITUTE, UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK
The Wood Buffalo National Park (WBNP) World Heritage Site Action Plan (https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/nt/woodbuffalo/info/action) was developed in response to a 2016 UNESCO reactive monitoring mission to the site, through which the World Heritage Centre and the International Union for Conservation of Nature determined that the pace and scale of development pressures outside the boundaries of the park (specifically hydro-electric and oil sands developments) and climate change posed threats to its world heritage values. The Action Plan comprises 142 actions, organized across seven thematic areas, including environmental flows and hydrology, that are required to protect the world heritage values of WBNP.
This postdoctoral position through Environment and Climate Change Canada will focus on supporting the development of a large holistic environmental flows framework in the Peace-Athabasca Delta region (Canada) as part of the Action Plan, including the integration of environmental and social-cultural components of the framework. We are particularly interested in individuals who combine experience with large, multidisciplinary datasets, Bayesian approaches, ecohydrological statistics, and strong geospatial analysis skills, and who could develop and apply novel tools for environmental flows assessment. Experience in methods for multicriteria decision-making/multi-objective optimization, socio-ecological systems analysis, programming and visualization in R, or risk assessment would be an added advantage.
The position will be working with Dr. Wendy Monk (Environment and Climate Change Canada), who is based at the Canadian Rivers Institute at the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus. Candidates must have graduated within the last 3 (three) years with a doctoral degree in a field of sciences although special consideration may be given to applicants who were unable to apply during the 3-year period, due to a significant career interruption or delay. Candidates with foreign credentials (obtained outside of Canada) must provide proof of Canadian equivalency.
