The Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB, www.igb-berlin.de) is the largest German institute dealing with freshwater ecology and inland fisheries. It is a member of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB, www.fv-berlin.de) and the Leibniz-Association (www.wgl.de). The FVB manages 8 large research institutes in Berlin that have close links to all three universities in the German capital. IGB offers excellent laboratory and field facilities for interdisciplinary research, large-scale experimental facilities, and long-term research programs and data sets.

PostDoc (m/f) in Fisheries Bio-Economics and Social-Ecological System Analysis of Marine Recreational Fisheries
The position is available as soon as possible, earliest by April, 1, 2019 for three years in the research group of Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus (www.ifishman.de). It is as part of an inter- and transdisciplinary, multi-investigator project entitled “Marine ecological-economic systems in the Western Baltic Sea and beyond: shifting the baseline to a regime of sustainability” (marEEshift), which was submitted to the BioTip call of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). A key project objective is to identify the processes that affect the resiliency of marine ecological-economic fisheries systems co-exploited by commercial and recreational fisheries in light of tipping points.
The postdoc’s subproject shall focus on analyzing the social-ecological interactions of the German marine recreational fisheries targeting coastal fish, such as the Western Baltic cod, using bio-economic research approaches. It aims at identifying the policy and management options to foster a transition towards sustainability, while accounting for social, ecological and institutional tipping points and regime shifts. The work is conducted in close collaboration with economists and fisheries biologists, encompassing national (Dr. Harry Strehlow, Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries, Rostock; Prof. Dr. Martin Quaas, iDiv, Leipzig; Prof. Dr. Christian Möllmann and Prof. Dr. Moritz Drupp, University Hamburg; Prof. Dr. Stefan Baumgärtner, University of Freiburg) and international partners (Prof. Dr. Joshua Abbott, Arizona State University, USA).
Duties and responsibilities:
- Involvement in stakeholder workshops to inform possible policy options as perceived by anglers of different type (charter boat, residents, tourists) and other stakeholders
- Quantifying the behavioural effects of current and possible future changes in the social, political, institutional and ecological attributes of the fishery for Western Baltic cod in German marine recreational anglers using stated and revealed choice-based preference surveys
- Construction and analysis of integrated bio-economic and social-ecological (simulation) models that explicitly link cod population dynamics and the behavioural feedbacks to changes in the cod stock and the regulatory environment
- Presenting research findings nationally and internationally as well as crafting peer-reviewed and popular scientific articles and outputs of public outreach
Requirements:
- PhD in economics, agricultural and/or resource economics, fisheries science, human dimensions of natural resources, natural resource management, or a related degree
- Skills in development of quantitative surveys among natural resource users and particularly the construction and analysis of choice experiments (stated and/or revealed)
- Econometric/statistical data analysis and simulation model building skills
- Motivation and ability to conduct interdisciplinary work by bridging fisheries biology and human behavior studies to achieve applied outcomes
- Ability to work in a team as well as independently
- English language (written, oral)
- German language and knowledge of recreational fisheries are strong benefits, not a precondition
At IGB, the successful candidate will part of an interdisciplinary, social-ecological working group at the interface of applied and fundamental fish, fisheries and conservation science, and will closely work with members of the group (www.ifishman.de). Full salary is paid according to the TVöD (E 13 pay scale), which includes health insurance and social security.
