Postdoctoral Fellow in Fisheries and Invasion Ecology

The Garvey Lab (Dr. Jim Garvey, students, and post-docs) in the Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences (CFAAS; https://fisheries.siu.edu/) at Southern Illinois University is seeking a multi-year postdoctoral fellow to join our funded research group investigating questions related to the ecology and management of invasive fishes. Research topics include mechanisms underlying movement, early life history dynamics and recruitment, and ecosystem/socioeconomic effects of invasions at regional and continental scales.

Responsibilities: Expected to plan, conduct, and publish funded research related to fisheries and fish ecology and will have access to the CFAAS’s experimental pond and wet lab facilities as well as several long-term telemetry and ecological monitoring datasets from the Illinois River and the upper Mississippi River. Interact with our team of graduate students, researchers, faculty, postdocs, and agency personnel. Participate in working groups with other university and agency personnel involved in the management of invasive fishes and occasionally present at meetings. Responsible for helping coordinate field work, write reports and grant proposals, analyze data (acoustic telemetry and hydroacoustic data), and conduct occasional fieldwork.

Qualifications: Self-motivated candidates with strong interpersonal and analytical skills and a demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publication. Demonstrated skills in GIS, statistical analysis, database management, acoustic telemetry, ecological modeling, and/or experience using scientific grade hydroacoustic equipment are preferred. Applicants should have defended their Ph.D. prior to their selected start date.
