The Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Physics at the University of Notre Dame, in partnership with the Environmental Change Initiative (ND-ECI), seek to hire a postdoctoral scholar to conduct basic and applied research on the bioaccumulation pathways of per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in the food webs of Lake Michigan, with particular attention to sportfish that humans consume. The position requires a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, demonstrated experience in analytical chemistry and/or environmental toxicology, and an interest in ecological systems. The project is jointly supported by the NOAA National Sea Grant College Program and the U.S. Geological Survey.

The initial appointment at the University of Notre Dame will be for one year, with the potential to extend for an additional year, depending on performance and available research funding. The position offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits, coupled with a low cost-of-living in/around South Bend, Indiana. The successful applicant would start January 1, 2021.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Ph.D. degree in environmental science, biological sciences, ecotoxicology, chemistry, or related discipline; expertise in systems modeling and/or with PFAS is a plus

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

· Ability to lead key elements of the research effort, interact with funding agencies, and work independently with limited supervision

· Demonstrated skill in analytical chemistry (e.g., LC/MS-MS, IRMS, etc.)

· Knowledge and/or interest in ecotoxicology and willingness to conduct limited fieldwork

· Strong written and oral communication skills

· Demonstrated experience publishing research in high quality, peer-reviewed journals

· Willingness and ability to mentor graduate and undergraduate students on the project

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
