Summary

The Geomicrobiology Laboratory in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan seeks a Laboratory Research Specialist to oversee lab operations and support research on the microbiology and biogeochemistry of harmful cyanobacterial blooms in the Great Lakes. The successful candidate will work with a team of graduate students, postdocs, and staff to conduct laboratory and field research.

Responsibilities*

  • (20%) Develop, design, and conduct research, trains others, creates new methods as well as independently work to improve existing methods in the Dick lab. This includes wet lab as well as field work. Collect and conduct samples for research/data analysis.
  • (20%) Has oversight for daily operation of laboratory; trains users on laboratory techniques and equipment usage; collects data for research reports and peer-review papers; maintains laboratory records and maintains protocol standards. Prepares reports and writes content for final submission into peer-reviewed journals.
  • (20%) Supervise undergraduate students including coaching and mentoring on various research techniques; enforcing laboratory safety protocols and procedures; departmental and University policies and procedures.
  • (20%) Manages data, including entry of data into databases, design and update of data sets, and development and implementation of data management protocols.
  • (20%) Designs and updates websites using graphical web-based software.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in a natural science discipline such as microbiology, chemistry, earth science, or environmental sciences, plus the ability to translate, adapt and apply this knowledge.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a laboratory (laboratory & field work) setting with experience in two or more of the following:
  • preparation of microbiological media and reagents
  • sterile technique and cultivation of bacteria
  • computer data entry and analysis including graphics
  • coordination and collection of environmental samples (water and soil) with minimum supervision
  • chemical and molecular methods such as gel electrophoresis, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, polymerase chain reaction, and extraction and quantification of nucleic acids, and epifluorescence microscopy

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with design and update of websites
  • Experience with data management
  • Experience with bioinformatic analysis of DNA sequence data such as 16S rRNA gene libraries and random shotgun metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data
