Rocky Shiner Field Technician — Oklahoma State University, Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit
Description
The OK Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit at Oklahoma State University is hiring two (2) field technicians to assist in surveying the presence of Rocky Shiners (Notropis suttkusi) in the tributaries of the lower Red River in Southeastern Oklahoma. Surveys will consist of hiking to survey sites, sampling stream/river segments via seine nets, identifying, and releasing sampled fishes. This project is funded by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Overnight camping may be required. Hours will not exceed more than 40 hours per week. Weekly work schedules could vary depending on the weather and water conditions.
Salary
Up to 40 hours a week at $15/hr.
Availability
Start date: After 5/12/25 | End date: Before 8/11/25
Qualifications
Experience working with fish and native fish ID is preferred, but motivated candidates without experience and high learning potential will be considered. Applicants must have a strong work ethic, positive attitude, work well with others, and be able to work outdoors in inclement weather (especially high heat conditions). Prior experience working in streams and conducting biological surveys is highly desired.
Requirements
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must be in good physical condition and able to hike while carrying equipment, pull a seine, and swim.
• Must be comfortable operating on a flexible schedule that may change on short notice.
• Must perform fieldwork in adverse field conditions (heat, rain, insects, snakes).
• University student or recent graduate in biological sciences or related fields.
