Job Summary

The incumbent is a lead biological monitoring representative for the South Biological Monitoring Unit. This position exists to prepare, organize, schedule, and lead the monitoring of rivers and streams in Minnesota by sampling for macroinvertebrates, fish, water chemistry, and habitat. The incumbent will use the macroinvertebrate monitoring data to determine if the waterbody supports aquatic life use to maintain the Impaired Waters List. The position will lead the development of watershed reports. This position with train, mentor and lead temporary staff in the field.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in environmental protection or related science field AND one year of professional environmental protection experience

OR

Three years of environmental protection experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Upper Midwest macroinvertebrate ecology and life history traits.

Field experience in macroinvertebrate and fish community sampling methods, stream habitat assessment methods, and water chemistry methods.

Familiarity with how indices of biological integrity are developed and calculated.

Familiarity with the use of database management tools for storage, analysis, and manipulation of monitoring data.

Experience with ArcGIS tools, electronic data capture applications, statistical software packages and word processing software.

Leadership experience on small and large teams, including effective oral communications skills, conflict management, goal setting and community building.

Experience communicating complex scientific decisions in an understandable fashion to internal and external stakeholders.

Familiarity with technical and plain language report development conveying scientific results.

Possession of an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License - see 'additional requirements'.

Physical Requirements

This position conducts field work in challenging environments across Minnesota. Moderate to heavy physical exertion is necessary in a variety of outdoor weather and environmental conditions. This position drives work vehicles throughout long field monitoring weeks and uses boats at times. The incumbent must be able to carry field equipment weighing up to 50 pounds over rough terrain on land and in water.

Additional Requirements

A driver’s license is an essential function of this position. This requires possession of an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License. The job offer is contingent on confirmation of a valid driver’s license AND a satisfactory driver's license record check. Requires a Class D driver's license: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.
