Description: A stream ecology crew lead is needed to assist with a riparian buffer manipulation study implemented on private forest lands in Oregon. The objective of the study is to assess how light, mediated by riparian canopy, affects stream ecosystem function. This project is an ongoing collaboration between the Warren Lab at Oregon State University and the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), based in Corvallis, OR.

Routine sampling in headwater streams will encompass many common methods for measuring aquatic abiotic and biotic variables. This includes electrofishing for freshwater vertebrates (fish and salamanders), PIT-tagging fish, sampling for benthic macroinvertebrates, collecting water and benthic algae samples, deploying data loggers, and measuring habitat geomorphology. Some lab work and data entry will be incorporated throughout the summer as well. 

 This position is a temporary summer position from June 1st to Oct 15th (4.5 months). It will be advised by a research assistant but will entail coordinating a small field crew (3-4 people) to sample various headwater streams across the region. The chosen applicant will also be responsible for some logistics while traveling during the work week, including arranging camping and food accommodations for the crew. 

 Working Conditions / Work Schedule: This position requires willingness and physical ability to perform remote fieldwork and camping for up to 5 days at a time. Variable work schedule may include working nonstandard hours/ travel/ working outdoors/hiking on uneven and rugged terrain, lifting up to 50 pounds, and the ability to squat, kneel, hike while wearing waders.
