Symposium on Urbanization and Stream Ecology

Posted:

Expiration Date:
02/15/2020

We are excited to announce that the 5th SUSE meeting will be in Austin, Texas, February 12-15, 2020. This group gathers every 3 years or so with the goal of bringing together the state of the science in applied urban stream ecology. The meeting this year moves us from the concept of Urban Stream Syndrome, developed during the first SUSE meeting, to collaboratively tackling specific case studies in a multidisciplinary framework.

We expect a lot of ecologists to attend, but also really need educators, planners, designers, engineers, economists and anyone else interested in urban systems. In addition, sponsorship opportunities are still available.

We hope to see you in Austin!

The 5th international Symposium on Urbanization and Stream Ecology (SUSE5) will be held February 12 to 15, 2020 in downtown Austin, Texas (USA) at the Palmer Events Center on beautiful Ladybird Lake. The intimate meeting of ~120 leading scientists, practitioners, and students will continue in the SUSE tradition of sharing and promoting collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches to managing and restoring streams in urbanizing landscapes. Such “wicked problems” require expertise in a variety of disciplines (e.g. natural and social sciences, engineering, landscape architecture, etc.) and SUSE5 seeks to bring together diverse teams to collaborate on real case studies spanning a gradient of Austin stream settings. Case study results will ultimately be shared with City of Austin staff to potentially advance to conceptual planning and other “pre-implementation” evaluation phases.

The draft agenda also includes opportunities to share individual research through #betterposter sessions. Interested registrants should be prepared to submit titles and abstracts (< 150 words) by December 15. The program also includes plenary talks by four experts in urban streams.

Attendees are strongly encouraged to register and arrange accommodations early (the meeting will be capped at 150 and we are competing for accommodations with several concurrent events with >10,000 attendees). Registration includes heavy appetizers during the opening session and three days of lunches. Some suggestions for individual accommodations near the event center include Extended Stay America (~$130 per night), Stay Alfred (~$150), The Hotel Carpenter (~$240), and AirBnB (~$80+).

Early Bird Registration through 12/15/19 ($200 for individuals / $100 for students)

Regular Registration 12/16/19 – 1/15/20 ($250 for individuals / $125 for students)

If space is still available, Late Registration will occur ahead of the opening session on site 2/12/20 ($300 for individuals / $150 for students). More information can be found at https://www.urbanstreamecology.org/suse5.html.

Questions can be directed to urbanstreamssymposium@gmail.com or any of the SUSE5 committee members. Special thanks to the University of Georgia River Basin Center for hosting the registration.
