Job Summary

This position plays a key role in supporting excellence in freshwater sciences education. The Teaching Learning and Technology Specialist I oversees the preparation of the supplies, field equipment and setup of courses for the School of Freshwater science courses and works closely with faculty teaching these courses as well as academic staff. This position is responsible for the preparation and storage of chemicals, supplies, and instrumentation, and field equipment used in instructional laboratory and field courses as well as assisting with scheduling time on research vessels and arranging the use of equipment needed for instruction. The position will also be the lead for the maintenance and regulation of use of the microscopy room at SFS. This position may include evening and weekend hours.

This position will also:

• Lead the acquisition, technical preparation, and organization of laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment used in the instructional laboratories of the School of Freshwater Sciences

• Support and participate in the educational mission of the instructional laboratories in the School, including providing customer service, providing safety and laboratory material assistance, and participating in meetings and trainings

• Oversee the preparation and maintenance of teaching lab equipment and train students, staff and faculty on this equipment

• Develop and maintain safety protocols and staff notes for experiment preparation

• Inspect and maintain, and oversee the repair of equipment, instrumentation, and computers used in instructional laboratories

• Oversight of teaching inventory

• Oversight of the microscope room at SFS

Responsibilities:

60% Course Coordination and Lab and Field management

• Coordinate with instructors to identify the equipment and supplies needed prior to the semester and making sure those equipment and supplies are available and in good operating condition

• Contributes to researching, designing, and/or acquiring learning resources, technologies, materials, and/or processes to support learning as requested by faculty

• Drive a university vehicle between SFS, UWM main campus, and any other site where SFS courses are offered to bring course materials to appropriate locations and assist with the courses

• Attend classes where lab equipment, the research vessel, or SFS research labs are being used; setting up equipment and supplies for laboratory/field courses

• Assist in field and laboratory courses in handling of equipment and training students and faculty on the proper use of equipment

• Assists with providing basic training and technical support to learners in settings such as classrooms, labs, and distance learning mediums

• Manage the courses schedule for use of the R/V Neeskay schedule and prepare equipment for field experiences

• Set up IT for courses as necessary in classrooms where IT support is not available

• Assist the Freshwater 980 colloquium instructor with scheduling speakers, virtual meeting access, and general support

• Assist with summer outreach events at the direction of the outreach coordinator

 

40% Inventory Management

• Document and keep track of lab and field equipment for Freshwater Science and Atmospheric Science courses

• Organize equipment at SFS and on UWM's main campus for freshwater/atmospheric science courses, control the distribution and use of such equipment, be the point person for instructors in identifying equipment needs

• Purchasing supplies and equipment when inventory is low and needed and track expenses within budget

• Manage equipment used for classes and calibrate and service as needed per guidelines

• Manage the microscopy room at SFS and all equipment within and training of students, faculty and staff on that equipment

• Support outreach department with preparing inventory for summer outreach events

Minimum Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver license (or other such valid operator’s permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation) and be able to meet or exceed the minimum requirements for driving on state business as detailed here: https://uwm.edu/risk-management/drivers/

• Bachelor’s Degree in physical science or closely related discipline

• Experience with lab equipment, instrumentation, and protocols

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in physical science or closely related discipline

• Experience in the instruction of science laboratory and field techniques

• Experience with inventory management within Excel or related platform

• Knowledge of handling and disposal requirements of chemicals

• Experience in field work and scientific seamanship

• Experience with microscopy equipment

• Experience writing instructional and technical documents
