Position Summary

The Department of Biology at the University of Dayton invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Biology, specializing in Freshwater Ecology, to join the faculty beginning August 16, 2020. The candidate will be expected to develop a nationally competitive, extramurally funded research program that involves Ph.D., M.S. and undergraduate students.

The successful candidate will have opportunities to engage in and contribute to the University of Dayton’s emphasis on sustainability education and research initiatives. The Hanley Sustainability Institute, established by a $12.5 million lead gift from the George and Amanda Hanley Foundation, supports student and faculty research, the development of sustainability curriculum, and sustainability initiatives in the greater Dayton community. Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching expectations include the development of an upper-level lecture course titled Biology of Rivers and Lakes and the accompanying field lab. Additional teaching will include a sophomore-level general Ecology course and there will be the opportunity to create other courses that contribute to the Biology and Environmental Biology majors and/or team-teach courses in the new Sustainability Major. The faculty hire will be expected to serve as a research mentor to Masters and PhD students in our graduate program as well as undergraduate students in our programs. Academic advising of undergraduate students in the Biology, Environmental Biology and Sustainability major is also expected. In addition, the faculty hire will be expected to participate in the Biology Department’s outside speaker program, a graduate special topics journal club course, and to supervise an occasional undergraduate seminar course.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. or international equivalent degree in Biology, Ecology or a related discipline
  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Articulated commitment to inclusive excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in ecological research
