Three Graduate Research Assistantships in Fisheries and Invasion Ecology

The Garvey Lab (Dr. Jim Garvey, students, and post-docs) in the (CFAAS) Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences (https://fisheries.siu.edu/) at Southern Illinois University is recruiting up to three funded graduate research assistants at the M.S. or Ph.D. level with an interest in fisheries and/or invasion ecology. Possible areas of sponsored research include: 1) Fish movement including novel analyses techniques for telemetry data, 2) Invasion ecology including the impacts and management of invasions, 3) Socioeconomic/ecological factors underlying the establishment and control of aquatic species invasions.

Responsibilities: Selected candidates will work with CFAAS faculty and post docs to develop research questions in their area of interest. Graduate students are expected to lead the planning and execution of their research, assist with funded research projects in the central US, present their research at scientific conferences, assist with report writing, and publish their research in the peer-reviewed literature.

Qualifications: We seek self-motivated candidates with strong interpersonal and analytical skills. Preference will be given to applicants with experience presenting at scientific conferences and/or publishing in the peer-reviewed literature. Applicants with demonstrated skills in GIS, statistical analysis, aquatic field sampling, database management, acoustic telemetry, and/or experience using scientific grade hydroacoustic equipment are preferred. Applicants must have a GPA > 3.0 and a valid driver’s license. Applicants at the Ph.D. level must have defended their M.S. prior to January 1, 2021. Salary: 12 month stipend plus tuition waiver.
