Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Department of Systems Analysis, Integrated Assessment and Modelling (Siam) is announcing a Two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ecological Modelling (80-100%)

The goals of the fellowship are to support an excellent young scientist on a path towards independence and foster novel research that is of relevance to the department’s main activities.

Research focus

Qualified individuals are invited to apply for the fellowship to conduct research in the field of aquatic ecology using advanced modelling tools (e.g. from the fields of statistical physics and non-linear dynamics) and inference techniques (for model selection, parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification). The area of potential applications covers a wide range of organism groups, freshwater ecosystems, and levels of biological organization.

Selection criteria

Selection of the postdoctoral fellow will be based on his or her academic record and his or her description of a research project to be conducted. Candidates should seek to leverage the expertise within Eawag to advance their research project. Research projects that include clear synergies with other research groups within Eawag are strongly encouraged.

Siam has expertise in mathematical modelling, Bayesian inference and high-performance computing. We also have strong collaborations within Eawag, including the departments of Aquatic Ecology, Environmental Microbiology and Fish Ecology & Evolution.

We seek candidates with novel modelling ideas and an interest in collaboration with experimentalists at Eawag, as well as candidates with own datasets interested in collaborating with modelers at Eawag. For the postdoctoral appointment an earned Ph.D. degree in the fields of ecology, mathematics, physics, engineering or a related field is required together with a strong mathematical background and experience in mathematical modelling.

Application

A successful application will include

  • A brief letter of application that includes the title of the proposed postdoctoral
  • A brief abstract (approx. 250 words) written for a reader who is not an expert in the topic
  • A curriculum vitae including a list of publications
  • A description of a research project to be conducted at Eawag (2 pages max, including references)
  • Names and contact information for two academic references (please do not include letters with the application)

Eawag offers a unique research and working environment and is committed to promoting equal opportunities for women and men and to support the compatibility of family and work. Applications from women are especially welcome. For more information about Eawag and our work conditions please consult www.eawag.ch and www.eawag.ch/en/aboutus/working/employment.

Applications must be submitted by 31 August 2019.
