The USGS Western Ecological Research Center, San Francisco Bay Estuary (SFBE) field station, conducts biological and physical sciences research to support natural resource management and decisions. SFBE has an Invertebrate Ecology Laboratory (IEL) that focuses on macroinvertebrate prey resources and foodweb research in estuarine and coastal zones. This pre-announcement is to gauge interest in a seasonal Biological Science Technician position (with a possibility to extend) within the IEL. The invertebrate technician will be stationed in Fremont, A valid driver’s license and good driving record are required. Housing is not provided.
Primary duties will be within the Invertebrate Ecology Laboratory: processing (sieving, sorting, identifying) macroinvertebrates using a compound microscope. Samples will consist of benthic cores, aquatic sweeps, eelgrass, or terrestrial invertebrates. Opportunities to assist with data collection in the field are available on an as-needed basis. Other lab duties include data entry, sample disposal, sample preparation, cleaning jars for re-use, summary analyses, and keeping the lab in good working order.
Requirements
· Experience sorting/identifying estuarine macroinvertebrates from the US Pacific Coast
· Strong work ethic and sense of responsibility
· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
· Quick learner with good time management skills
· Good communication and writing skills
· Ability to work independently with little supervision
· Ability to work on a compound microscope daily

· Compensation: $19.74/hr
