We invite applications to participate in the Woodstoich 4 Workshop to be held August 13-17, 2019 at Flathead Lake Biological Station, Montana. The meeting is being organized by Dr. Michelle Evans-White (University of Arkansas) and Dr. Jim Elser (University of Montana).
What is Woodstoich?
The Woodstoich workshop is a product-focused event for early career scientists working in the field of ecological / biological stoichiometry or those interested in integrating stoichiometry to their research. Its vision is to create a diverse community of early career scientists to invigorate ecology and evolution by improving and expanding the use of stoichiometric theory. Participants will join small, diverse working groups of early career scientists to collaboratively develop a manuscript around one of five defined themes outlined below.
The workshop is free to all accepted participants, (including food and lodging), and travel expenses within the USA will be compensated.
The following 5 working group themes will be explored during Woodstoich 4:
- Socio-ecological stoichiometry: Elemental ratios link environmental change and public health
- Stoichiometry in emerging models of terrestrial organic matter dynamics
- The role of silicon in elemental ratios along a land-sea continuum
- Living in cold: Ecological stoichiometry in cryosphere
- Eco-evolutionary dynamics in altered stoichiometric environments

Responsibilities & timeline: Group members will be selected by March 15, and working group leaders will begin coordinating work on analyses and manuscripts by group members remotely to produce a complete rough draft prior to the workshop. The manuscript draft will be completed during a 5-day workshop in August 2019. Resulting manuscripts will be submitted and rapidly peer-reviewed (24-h) during the workshop for potential publication in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution.
Required qualifications: Completed PhD or current PhD student in Biology, Ecology, Evolution, or a related discipline and no prior participation in earlier Woodstoich workshops.
Preferred qualifications: Applications from current PhD candidates and postdocs will receive priority consideration, but applications from other early career scientists (e.g., assistant professors) will also be accepted. Prior experience using biological stoichiometry is not required.
Application materials: Please submit a 1 page cover letter and a curriculum vitae (including contact information for 3 references) as a single PDF file by 1 March 2019. The cover letter should describe why you’re interested in Woodstoich and a brief description of the perspectives and skills you would bring to 1-2 of the projects listed above. You will also be asked to rank the 5 projects according to your interest in participating when you apply.
