Working Title: Ice modeler

Full/Part Time: Full-time

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $75,000 - $80,000

DEPT ID: 435112

Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) is seeking a highly-skilled ice-ocean modeler to work with a multi-disciplinary team that is developing physical models for the northern Pacific Ocean, Bering, Chukchi, and Arctic Seas. Specifically, the candidate will help with the development of storm surge forecasts for western Alaska, which will help guide management decisions in this region. The candidate will work with the project lead to implement, test, and verify the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model (CICE) for western Alaska, as well as to implement the verified ice model in a coupled ice-surge-wave forecast model. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills related to coupled ice-ocean modeling, high performance computing, and ability to lead or contribute to peer-reviewed publications.

The successful applicant’s appointment will be with CIGLR, which is part of the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. CIGLR is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and NOAA that brings together experts from academia and government research labs to work on pressing problems facing the Great Lakes region. The candidate will spend the majority of their time at NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) in Ann Arbor.

The University of Michigan is consistently ranked among the top American public research universities, and Ann Arbor is routinely ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S. due to its affordability, natural beauty, preservation of wooded areas, vibrant arts program, and lively downtown.

This position offers a highly competitive salary plus benefits. The initial appointment is for one year, with opportunity for extension based on performance, need, and availability of funds.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the project lead to test, calibrate, and validate the Los Alamos Sea Ice model (CICE) for the oceans around western Alaska. Verify the model results by comparing with data from satellite-based observations, coastal stations, and other available observations.
  • Work with the project team to implement the validated CICE into a coupled ice-wave-surge modeling system using the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF).
  • Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor or master degree in the natural sciences or engineering, with 1-3 years of related experience in polar oceanography and modeling in research project and/or professional activities.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • Strong communication skills for writing papers, reports, and for giving presentations
  • Experience running ice-ocean models in a high-performance computing environment.
  • Previous experience in processing large datasets in a variety of different data formats (ASCII, GRIB, binary, or NetCDF).

Desired Qualifications

  • Skill in working with ice charts, surface meteorological station, and/or numerical weather prediction data.
  • Preference will be given to a candidate that has experience with the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model.
  • Preference will also be given to a candidate with a demonstrated ability to take lead in writing a scientific paper for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
