A Postdoctoral research opportunity with the USDA Forest Service, Land and Watershed Management Program, Pacific Northwest Research Station, is currently available located in Corvallis, OR.
Comprehensive information about aquatic ecosystems and best available science contribute to the ability of Forest Managers to effectively make planning decisions across the US, and locally at individual forests. The selected participant will contribute to a comprehensive description of aquatic biodiversity and ecosystems across the US. This will be accomplished by using NatureServe biodiversity datasets in addition to other informative geospatial information to develop mapping products and regional summaries. The participant will contribute to and possibly lead publications describing national-scale aquatic biodiversity summaries and analyses of how hydrologic characteristics, physiography, climate regime, and land use/cover affect drinking water production, aquatic biodiversity, and the prevalence of at-risk aquatic species.
The PNW Research Station Corvallis Forest Science Laboratory is a hub for the development of innovative and relevant science on aquatic species. With guidance from a mentor, the participant will gain experience in collaborating with USDA agencies, particularly the Forest Service, and collaborating with partnering academic institutions, in particular Oregon State University, in facilitating a comprehensive aquatic biodiversity assessment; developing map products at regional and national scales; and synthesizing scientific publications for natural resources managers, forest land owners, and policy makers.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 1, 2019; start date is flexible
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and the USFS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of USFS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
The annual stipend will be $66,250. Relocation allowances will not be provided, but a health insurance supplement will be provided. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The appointment is full-time at USFS in the Corvallis, Oregon, area. Participants do not become employees of USFS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the start date of the appointment. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred skills:
- Experience conducting quantitative assessments of aquatic organisms including but not limited to fishes, amphibians, macroinvertebrates and turtles
- Geospatial mapping and analysis skills including geodatabases. Analysis should include experience with vector and raster datasets.
- Statistical analysis and modeling that combines geospatial and biological datasets. Modeling skills may be developed using frequentist or Bayesian methodologies.
