RATE OF PAY:    $21.40 – $32.13/PER HOUR, DOQ/DOE

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  

We are seeking an Aquatic Biologist I to assist Lake Roosevelt Fisheries Evaluation Program Limnology Project. Program goals are to assess environmental impacts from hydro-operations, wild and hatchery fish populations, and to predict fishery responses to management actions. The Aquatic Biologist position is responsible for conducting and assisting Limnologists with field surveys (including but not limited to field prep, reservoir-wide limnological surveys, zooplankton collection, data entry, quality assurance, data analyses, and equipment care and maintenance. This position will also assist Program Biologists with fisheries surveys (creel, netting, and electrofishing), fish tagging, and other program related-activities.

DUTIES INCLUDE:  

  • Assist Program Limnologists with field surveys including water sample collection, water column profiling, operation and maintenance of multi-probe datasonde, and zooplankton and invertebrate collection.
  • Assist with design and implementation of limnological, water quality, primary/secondary production, and macroinvertebrate production protocols and survey methodologies.
  • Field preparation and equipment maintenance for field surveys.
  • Data entry and quality assurance of limnological data.
  • Conduct statistical analyses and interpretation of limnological, water quality, production, and macroinvertebrate data.
  • Co-author annual reports to funding agency.
  • Co-author journal articles.
  • Present information to both professional and local public interest groups.
  • Participate in local and regional coordination with state, and tribal co-managers of Lake Roosevelt.
  • Taxonomic identification and quality assurance of zooplankton and macroinvertebrate samples. 
  • Assist Program Biologists with fisheries-related field surveys including but not limited to creel, netting, electrofishing, and tagging.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Ability to accurately identify and process zooplankton and macroinvertebrate samples using taxonomic keys and literature for accurate identifications and apply appropriate limnological and ecological approaches and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of appropriate sample handling and preparation techniques.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. 
  • Excellent written and oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Excellent work ethic and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in supervised and non-supervised settings. 
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and work effectively with co-workers, project partners, co-managers, and public outreach organizations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

  • B.S. degree in aquatic biology, limnology, aquatic ecology, fisheries, or closely related field plus 2-years of experience as a professional biologist. M.S. degree in limnology, aquatic ecology, aquatic biology, or applicable related field may be substituted for 2 years’ experience
  • Strong background in statistics and data analysis with demonstrable proficiency in software such as ArcGIS, R, SYSTAT, or SigmaPlot. 
  • This position requires physically demanding work outdoors in variable weather conditions, including inclement weather.
  • Good employment history with references.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License and good driving record.
  • Boating experience, demonstrated training in boating safety, with particular emphasis on swift water boating experience and safety training preferred.
  • Must have (or ability to attain) a Washington Boater Education Card.

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION:

This position requires the operation and use of heavy equipment (boats, vehicles) and is subject the Spokane Tribe’s drug and alcohol testing policy.
