Life Science Technician — Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, University of Georgia

The University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory in Aiken, South Carolina is seeking applications for a Life Sciences Technician to provide professional support to studies of the ecology and ecotoxicology of aquatic invertebrates, fish, and riparian spiders. This research will be applied to addressing the distribution and movements of contaminants in lotic systems, storm water impact assessment and development of improved management options, use of constructed wetlands to sequester contaminants, and stream and riparian restoration/management.

Diverse fieldwork will include collection of aquatic macroinvertebrates, emerging insects, fish, sediment and water samples, maintaining automated water samplers and data loggers, and geomorphic surveys. Preparation of various media for chemical analyses, operating a direct mercury analyzer, collecting morphometric data from biota, and sediment characterization will be performed in the laboratory. Office tasks will include management of complex data sets, assisting with analyses, and report/manuscript writing.

Individuals with experience in aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology, aquatic entomology, ichthyology/fisheries, or hydrology are encouraged to apply. A B.S. with research experience or M.S. in applicable field is required. Experience with aquatic insect identification or willingness to learn is preferred. Position can advance into lab manager position. The initial appointment will be for 1 year with renewal dependent upon employee performance and funding availability. Position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is identified.
