Diatom Analyst, Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene — Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is searching for an individual who enjoys diatom taxonomy and who wants to be part of a successful team of environmental scientists.

The person hired for this position will work in the Environmental Toxicology Department to analyze freshwater diatom samples collected from rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands to identify and enumerate specimens; document taxa with digital images; perform QA/QC analyses; and prepare reports. We specifically seek a candidate who can enhance and grow an active diatom analysis program at the WSLH. This includes creating and fostering new internal partnerships within UW-Madison as well as new external clients, partnerships and collaborations with other universities, government agencies, researchers, etc. Additional responsibilities include conducting toxicity tests on water and sediment samples, maintaining cultures of live organisms, maintaining records, making entries of quality assurance activities, training staff, assisting in developing new methods, and participating on a toxicological research team. It is anticipated the responsibilities will be divided between diatom-related and toxicity test-related tasks.
