Fall 2025 Master's Student in Agricultural Water Quality — University of Arkansas

The Speir Lab at the University of Arkansas is recruiting a master’s student to explore water quality issues in agricultural systems for Fall 2025. The selected student’s thesis could focus on nutrient transport in an agricultural watershed, nitrous oxide emissions from tailwater recovery systems, nutrient cycling in rice fields, and/or edge-of-field runoff data. The specific focus will be determined based on the student’s interests and The Speir Lab’s needs. We will also be recruiting a PhD student for a Spring 2026 start to work on the impacts of biochar-amended poultry litter applications on watershed-scale nutrient loss.

Students in the Speir Lab receive extensive training in water chemistry analysis, foundational stream ecology methods, and scicomm. We also conduct regular year-round field work (~1-2x per week - even when it’s cold, raining, etc!). Students will attend conferences to present their work.

If you're interested in joining the lab, email Dr. Speir prior to applying to discuss your fit with the lab. Include a detailed description of your past research experience (if applicable), why you'd like to join the lab, and your curriculum vitae/resume. For more info, visit https://speirlab.weebly.com/.
