Freshwater Mussel Research Technician - University of Missouri - Columbia 

Position description: Two technicians will assist a University of Missouri graduate student & Missouri Department of Conservation staff to conduct freshwater mussel surveys in rivers across the state of Missouri. Surveys will consist primarily of snorkeling, freshwater mussel identification, and habitat data collection using motorized and non-motorized (canoe/kayak) watercrafts. Applicants must be available for overnight travel (hotel accommodations, food, and transportation provided). Housing not provided.
 
Why you should apply: You will gain field experience in the natural resources field while traveling to a variety of unique rivers around the state of Missouri. Freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled groups of aquatic organisms in North America and Missouri harbors several rare and endangered species. Technicians will receive free training on how to identify and sample mussels, but also gain more widely applicable skills like collecting stream habitat data and working as part of a team. Your contributions will help improve sampling methods for mussels and help biologists learn more about mussel habitat.
 
Location: University of Missouri – Columbia
 
Pay & Hours: $16/hour; 40 hours/week
 
Duration: Late May 2026 – August 2026 (flexible start & end dates; possibility for extension through fall 2026) – Students welcome
 
Preferred qualifications: Ability to conduct snorkel surveys, comfortable working in water and on boats for extended periods of time, interest in learning freshwater mussel identification (previous experience welcome, but training provided), available for overnight travel and flexible work schedule.
