Technical Assistant, Lake Sturgeon - Water Security Agency

The Ecological and Habitat Assessment Services unit is seeking motivated, enthusiastic, self-reliant temporary Technical Assistants. This is a field-based position that provides an opportunity to gain experience in species at-risk conservation, management-based research and applied ecological monitoring.

Under the guidance of the Instream Flow Ecologist and Senior Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Ecologist, you will conduct lake sturgeon habitat and spawning surveys along the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers.

Primary duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: collection of habitat parameters (i.e., depth, velocity, substrate) across river cross-sections during different flow periods (e.g., spring freshet, baseflows), assessment of adult spawning condition via targeted angling, and egg capture via drift nets and egg mats during the anticipated spawning period (May–June). Other tasks may include PIT-tagging, recording biological information, operation and maintenance of data collection equipment, data input and analysis.
