Summary
The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) is seeking an individual to work with the physical modeling team at CIGLR and the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) to conduct hydrodynamic-ice model simulations for the Great Lakes, assess the model skill, and apply the hydrodynamic-ice datasets to the oil spill transport model at NOAA. The individual will also assist the team with hosting a workshop with professionals at NOAA and U.S. Coast Guard to discuss information gaps, modeling needs, and impacts on the freshwater ecology and coastal communities. 

Required qualifications

  • A master’s degree in physical oceanography, coastal engineering, or a similar field, with a background in hydrodynamic modeling.
  • Familiarity with data analysis and visualization in a scripting environment using R, Python, or similar software.
  • Experience with running simulations on supercomputer or cluster computing environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work both as a team and independently.

Desired qualifications

  • Experience with an ice model such as the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model (CICE).
  • Experience with an oil spill transport model such as the General NOAA Operational Modeling Environment (GNOME).
  • Knowledge of oil spill transport in open and ice-covered waters.
