The Lake and River Ecosystems Section, within the Applied Sciences Bureau of the SFWMD, is recruiting for the position of Section Leader or Science Supervisor to manage a diverse team of environmental scientists conducting ecosystem research and monitoring in the headwater lakes of the Everglades (Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes).

This candidate will primarily oversee implementation and development of lake research and monitoring projects related to the Lake Okeechobee Protection Program and Kissimmee River Restoration. This position will assist the Section Administrator with evaluating program direction and addressing key knowledge gaps related to ecosystem restoration through hydrologic and water quality improvements. Position responsibilities include supervising 7-9 scientists and associated monitoring projects, evaluating personnel performance, developing and managing section projects and budgets, and associated administrative and planning tasks. May also manage contracts with other entities and an associated contractor workforce as needed.

Specific projects to oversee or implement may include water quality assessments; nutrient budget developments; algal bloom monitoring; plankton, macroinvertebrate, fishery, wading bird, and littoral vegetation evaluations. Work and education background should include extensive experience in ecosystem assessments.

Specific supervisory responsibilities include goal setting, performance evaluation, coaching and counseling, corrective action, addressing/identifying training needs, measuring workflow efficiencies and implementing improvements, determining work schedules, reallocating resources to meet priority assignments, and recruiting staff.

The candidate should have highly effective team-building skills with experience in applying approaches, tools, and techniques for working with individuals and teams in a constructive and collaborative manner. Effective communication skills are a must. Candidate must work well independently, effectively schedule and manage time to meet strict deadlines, and complete projects and perform tasks with minimal direction and guidance.

This position reports to the Section Administrator, serves alongside the Section Leader overseeing Kissimmee River Restoration Evaluation projects, and will oversee a staff of 7-9 direct reports.

This position may be filled at the lower grade of Science Supervisor, depending on experience.

Employment Guidelines:

Section Leader: Master's Degree in limnology, wetland / riverine science, or similar and 10+ years’ experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline and leadership roles that can be directly applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives. Prior experience should include four (4) years of increased supervisory accountability and leading a scientific program.

Salary Minimum: $69,388.80 Salary Midpoint: $82,492.80 Salary Maximum: $118,955.20

Science Supervisor: Master's Degree in limnology, wetland / riverine science, or similar and 8+ years’ experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives. Prior experience should include two (2) years supervising scientific staff or assisting managers in leading a scientific department.

Salary Minimum: $62,961.60 Salary Midpoint: $74,838.40 Salary Maximum: $107,910.40

License(s) / Certification(s): Valid State of Florida Driver's License required.

Physical Requirements/ Working Environment: Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during, and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role. This position may require occasional field work to develop / support projects or train staff, so extensive field experience and the ability to operate motorboats / airboats would be beneficial.
