Aquatic Ecology Technician (Hourly) — Prairie Research Institute

The Illinois River Biological Station is seeking up to two field technicians to conduct applied research in aquatic ecology and large river systems throughout the state of Illinois. Technicians will assist large river ecologists in the collection and analysis of water and zooplankton samples. This position will be 40 hours per week and will be located in Havana, Illinois.

QUALIFICATIONS
Must have or be in the process of working toward a bachelor's degree in aquatic ecology, biology, zoology, or a biological-related field. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and a strong ability to swim. Candidates must have experience with field collection protocols, safety protocols concerning fieldwork and data collection, and must have experience in laboratory work and utilizing microscopes. Experience with water quality sampling techniques, identification of zooplankton native to Midwestern rivers, ability to do simple data analysis and data summaries, and experience presenting data, writing reports, and producing peer-reviewed publications is preferred but not required. This position requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 50 or more pounds of gear), commitment to safety, and meticulous data recording. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, long days with possible nights and weekends.

Salary: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour, depending on experience

Available: August 1 – October 31, 2024, with a potential extension to December 2024 and beyond. The starting date can be adjusted slightly depending on the candidate’s availability, including a potential starting date before August 1st.
