"Everyone here is smart, distinguish yourself by being kind"
Emily Bernhardt's essay "Being Kind" was recently featured in Nature. The original essay, from September 2016, was lost in the recent transition to the new website but has been reposted. Emily was the president of SFS from 2016 to 2017.
Emily's essay inspired the first "Kindness in Science" workshop at the Unversity of Aukland in December 2017. Nature notes that the workshop defined kindness in science as “an inclusive approach that fosters diversity, respect, well-being and openness, leading to better science outcomes.” In addition, Nature interviewed seven researchers about kindness in science, including Emily.
