EPA and Army Corps of Engineers Propose New WOTUS Definition

The US EPA has released a proposed rule redefining Water of the US (WOTUS) that would, among other things, remove intermittent and ephemeral headwater streams and non-adjacent wetlands from protection under the Clean Water Act, a change from protections proposed for these waters in 2015.

The Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies, of which SFS is a member society, released a statement that notes:

2018 Student Presentation Award Winners

Each year at the annual meeting, SFS members judge oral and poster presentations to students to provide feedback and recognize the excellent work done by our student members. This year, the quality of student presentations was as high as ever. We are pleased to announce the winners of the presentation awards listed below. Special Election for SFS Board of Directors

Please take a moment to cast your ballot for the Academic and Early Career representatives. They are the voice and voting power for all academic and early career members as the voting members of the SFS Board of Directors (BoD). They are responsible for bringing pressing issues and action items to the BoD during quarterly meetings. Academic and Early Career representatives also work with their respective committees to reach out to the membership to gauge current views that shapes action items to share with the BoD. Each representative serves a 3-year term.

CEIC announces undergrad conservation research travel award

The Conservation and Environmental Issues Committee has announced a new travel award for undergraduates engaging in conservation research. The first award will be $1000 for a student to present their research at the 2019 meeting in Salt Lake City. The deadline for application is Sept. 30, 2018 and award announcement will be made Nov. 1, 2018.
