The SFS Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) has announced a 2019/2020 Request for Proposals for projects that address Objectives and Goals of the SFS Five-Year Strategic Plan. The LRPC is allocated $25K annually by SFS to encourage efforts to implement Strategic Plan elements.

The competition is open to SFS members only, and proposals should be submitted according the process and guidelines outlined below:

Nancy Grimm, long-time SFS member and 2019 SFS Fellow, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Election to the Academy is one of the highest honors a scientist can achieve. Congratulations, Dr. Grimm!

Ecologist and diatomist Charles David (Dave) McIntire passed away peacefully on January 4, 2019, from complications from leukemia. He was 86 years old.

The Board of Directors has approved revisions to the SFS by-laws, with a summary provided here. For reference, the current constitution and by-laws can be found here. The proposed revised version of the by-laws can be read here.

SFS submitted a comment on the proposed rule by the US EPA to change the definition of the Waters of the US (WOTUS). The full comment can be found on the SFS WOTUS resources page and is linked here. SFS strongly encourages its members to submit their own comments to the EPA.

The 2019 Annual Meeting Committee has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming annual meeting in Salt Lake City May 19-23 at the Salt Palace Convention Center. We are excited about the meeting, as it promises to be one of our largest, with 935 abstracts submitted, 29 Special Sessions, and a number of contributed sessions on a variety of topics. The committee has assembled a great scientific program around the theme of translational ecology in freshwater science, including exciting plenary speakers, oral and poster sessions, and workshops.

2019 SFS Annual Meeting abstract submission deadline extended to February 18, 2019

Based on input from federal employees influenced by the recent government shutdown, as well as other factors, the decision has been made for a one-time extension of the abstract submission deadline for the Salt Lake City SFS meeting to before midnight (23:59) Mountain Standard Time (MST), Monday, February 18th. No abstract submissions will be accepted after this deadline.

The SFS Elections and Place Committee (E&PC) is soliciting members to run for a suite of elected offices.
